The Portland Aerial Tram
Moving on down the list of 10 Things I Love About Portland, is the Portland Aerial Tram. This probably is one of the least Portland-y things that I can like about my town, and I’ve met very few Portlanders who share my sentiment. I worked for Oregon Health & Science University while the tram was being debated, stalled, constructed and then finally finished. It was a continual source of arguments even within my office, as even employees didn’t agree that it was the best thing since sliced bread.
According to the OHSU Portland Aerial Tram’s website:
* there are 3,300 linear feet between the base (South Waterfront) and the top (the Kohler Pavilion)
* the tram travels at 22 miles per hour
* the tram rises 500 feet into the air above 1-5, SW Terwilliger Pkwy & the “Lair Hill” neighborhood
* the city of Portland owns the public transportation system
* $40 million was spent by OHSU on the tram, $8.5 million will be collected through property taxes (which is one reason why there was so much drama about the tram actually going through
If you would like to take a ride on the tram, you can do so; for $4. You can ride Monday through Friday between 6am-10pm, Saturday between 9am-5pm and Sunday (May 20-Sept 16 only) between 1-5pm. The tram departs every five minutes and the last tram will leave the bottom deck 15 minutes before closing.
I mentioned the fact that I have ridden the tram, and while I got to ride it for free (and take three friend for free, as well), I would recommend it to anyone looking for a relatively cheap thrill. It also provides a great look at SW Portland from above!
