Good Eats in Portland

by Sarah Gould

Number 5 in my list of 10 Things I Love About Portland was the fact that there are LOTS of good things to eat here in town!

The best way to find great grub in Portland is to ask around. Everyone has their own opinions and is more than willing to share them with you if you’re willing to listen. I will expound on this topic more in the future, with my own opinions and reviews (and whatnot) but for now, I’m going to City Search to share the Best Cheap Eats 2007 with you.

1. Cha! Cha! Cha!
1208 NW Glisan St , Portland , OR , 97209-3015
“Festive taqueria in the Pearl offers a variety of tacos and other traditional dishes.”
I’ve been here, many times and LOVE their burritos. Tasty (and cheap) stuff! There’s a reason they’re number one on the list!

2. Nicholas’ Restaurant
318 SE Grand Ave , Portland , OR , 97214
“Middle Eastern noshing fare that won’t drain your pocketbook.”

3. Le Bistro Montage
301 SE Morrison St , Portland , OR , 97214
“Inexpensive Cajun-style fare in a place where you never know who you’ll share a table with.”
Not only do you not know who you’ll be sitting next to, you never know what shape your leftovers will be wrapped into. The last time I was there, my mac-n-cheese was wrapped into a cat!

4. Pastini Pastaria
1426 NE Broadway St , Portland , OR , 97232
“Still pumping out soulful pasta for appreciative Irvingtonites and the too-beat-to-cook white-collar crowd.”
Their cappelini is amazing. As is the olive tray. I will be visiting here with a friend next week!

5. Du’s Grill
5365 NE Sandy Blvd , Portland , OR , 97213-2564
“Bento is all this place does, and they do it right.”

6. Escape From New York Pizza
622 NW 23rd Ave , Portland , OR , 97210-3209
“A traditional slice to satisfy the New Yorker at heart.”

7. Aqui Mexican Cafe
1408 SE 12th Ave , Portland , OR , 97214
“Casual spot offers festive dining and a diverse menu of traditional and new favorites.”

8. Arleta Library Cafe
5513 SE 72nd Ave , Portland , OR , 97206

9. Laughing Planet Cafe
3320 SE Belmont St , Portland , OR , 97214
“Belmont’s burrito Mecca redefines what fills a tortilla.”
I’ve eaten at their street cart and enjoyed it immensely!

10. Ya Hala Lebanese Cuisine
8005 SE Stark St , Portland , OR , 97215
“Lively, mural-covered Lebanese restaurant features traditional favorites like falafel and kabobs, plus mezza, fatayer and sfeeha. ”

About Portland, OR

There are a lot of misconceptions about Portland, Oregon. We are not all communists, we are not all hippies, and many of the females do in fact shave. Portland is a vibrant, progressive community that balances the native with the newcomer, the eco-minded with the lumber industry, and the natural with the urban. About Portland, OR is a home for all the contradictions.
