Dumb Laws and Silly Ordinances of Portland

Friday, May 4th, 2007

parking-only.JPGFor the most part, laws were intended to protect people and preserve property. Most of the time, there is a reson why the law was created in the first place. There are one or two on the list that just seem to be common sense, but then again - common sense should tell a person not to use a blow dryer in the shower, also. But since it’s on the warning label, we’ll have to assume someone has tried it! (By the way, DON’T try it!!) On the other hand, some laws just don’t make any sense at all. If you know some history on why these were created, please let us know.

  • It’s against the law for a wedding ceremony to be performed at a skating rink.
  • People may not whistle underwater.
  • You cannot wear roller skates in restrooms.
  • Shoelaces must be tied while walking down the street.
  • No one may attempt to cause someone to think that their property may be subjected to “offensive physical contact”.
  • Minors may not enter a room where a “social game” is being played.
  • Trucks may not be parked on the street.
  • Riders of sleds may not attach themselves to passing cars.

As for the “Parking Only” sign, I found that a few miles from home. I’m still wondering what else you could do with a parking spot besides park! Just in case you’re in the mood for some more crazy laws, here’s a few from Alabama to Illinois. Some are just outright hilarious!

Man Facing Multiple Charges Bolts from Courtroom

Thursday, April 26th, 2007

While appearing in court on a long list of criminal charges, Wayne Michael Trent made a failed attempt to escape while being ordered into custody by a judge at the Justice Center Courthouse. Just as Deputy Nicole Morrisey-O’Donnell of the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office was preparing to handcuff Trent, he bolted out of the courtroom, with Deputy Morrisey-O’Donnell right behind him. He was about 30-yards outside of the courtroom door when she tased him, and he was aprehended once again. But as you can see in the YouTube video, as he was being handcuffed, he called out to his mom.

Unfortunately, even mom can’t keep her son from being charged with at least a few of the 12 charges that he could be facing. The list of charges includes Escape III (Class A Misd), Harrassment (Class B Misd), Criminal Impersonation, Criminal Impersonation of a Peace Officer, Theft I, UUMV, Burglary II, Criminal Tresspass II, Possession of a stolen Vehicle, Identity Theft (Class C Felony), Possession of False Police ID (Class A Misd), and Criminal Impersonation (Class A Misd).

About Portland, OR

There are a lot of misconceptions about Portland, Oregon. We are not all communists, we are not all hippies, and many of the females do in fact shave. Portland is a vibrant, progressive community that balances the native with the newcomer, the eco-minded with the lumber industry, and the natural with the urban. About Portland, OR is a home for all the contradictions.
