Bridge(s) Over Troubled Water

I love the bridges in Portland. Moving on to number seven I thought I’d talk a bit about the bridges in Portland. My favorite is the Fremont Bridge and especially driving over it at nighttime back into NW Portland. B-E-A utiful!
With a little help from some fellow DamnPortlanders, I made sure I had the entire list of “major” Portland Bridges. Ten of ‘em and a few lines about or a picture of each!
Fremont Bridge - my favorite, newest to Portland (1973), gorgeous at nighttime! (The picture at the top of this entry is my Fremont Bridge.)
Burnside Bridge - marks the absolute center of Portland, done in 1926 and is the dividing line between North & South Portland
Steel Bridge - takes foot traffic, takes Amtrak traffic, takes MAX traffic, takes automobile traffic … VERY versatile bridge, finished in 1912, both levels lift independently of one another!
St. Johns Bridge - done in 1931, lots of people think it’s the most beautiful (not me!), is a designated historical landmark that many people miss because it’s not right in Portland.
Morrison Bridge - finalized in 1958 and is in between the Hawthorne & Burnside bridges, it’s even lit during the holidays!
Broadway Bridge - done in 1913, quite the drawbridge, is a double-leaf bascule span constructed bridge (30,000 points to the person that can explain that to me in human terms!)
Marquam Bridge - a newer (1966) bridge which loops around downtown Portland connecting I-5 and I-405
Ross Island Bridge - the only cantilever truss bridge in all of Oregon, finished in 1926 for $1.9 million!
Sellwood Bridge - a 1925 bridge that boasts the most traffic of a two-land bridge in all of Oregon!
Hawthorne Bridge - oldest vertical lift bridge in Oregon from 1910 as well as the oldest highway bridge, busiest bicycle AND transit bridge in Oregon (over 4,800 bikes & 750 busses a day!).
Facts are pulled from Wikipedia because I only remembered facts about my favorite bridges! I featured Andrew Hall yesterday and he takes amazing pictures of the bridges, but today’s pictures are from random Google searches unless otherwise noted. LOL … Mr. Hall can’t get ALL the credit in this blog!
